Abstract

|
Candida albicans, most common of all, is found frequently as habitual saprophytic organism in digestive tract and the most common involvement is the esophagus. Gastric candidiasis may cause diffuse mucosal involvement or focal invasion of benign gastric ulcers. Gastric candidiasis is an uncommon disorder, but recently it has increased as a result of the greater use of chemotherapy, steroids, antibiotics, immunosuppressive drugs, and drugs that reduce the gastric acid production and of underlying disease such as diabetes mellitus, impairing gastric emptying, inducing gastric stasis which leads to secondary colonization of the fungus. The diagnosis was done by visualizing the characteristic budding yeast and pseudohyphae in endoscopic biopsies. We report here three cases of gastric candidiasis with improvement after treatment with proton pump inhibitor, Helicobacter pylori eradication and/or antifungal agent.
